EMF Methods, Approaches and Themes

EMF Methods, Approaches and Themes includes explorations, learning and exposure to a variety of methods, approaches and themes that one might engage in somatic focused Expressive Movement Facilitation. Methods include experiential anatomy (of the Body Systems) and creative movement; approaches include rhythmic and vocal engagement, and themes include moving in polarities, exploring character-archetypes, and discovering a felt sense of boundaries in relationship to self and other. LBMS is integrated through-out this teaching. Anything at all from one’s life could become a theme in EMF, so the structures and practices offered for exploring a theme in this course can be applied widely. Students will also have a chance to practice the initial steps of the EMF facilitation process in partner work and reflect on their experiences.

Learning Objectives for this course:

Through movement experientials (groups, partners, individual), inclusion of writing/art, discussion and reflection, students will:

1)      Practice skills in leading warm-ups. Deepen understanding about the purpose of a warm-up and the importance of concepts such as centering and grounding.

2)      Integrate understanding of LBMS and its role in underpinning EMF movement experientials. Practice skills in observing and applying LBMS.

3)      Understand the body as “naturally intelligent” and understand aspects of Body Systems, including their own experience of the “mind” of each.

4)      Begin to develop skills in working with Body Systems and applying the intelligence and architecture of these systems for facilitation of their own embodiment and for designing EMF sessions.

5)      Understand the importance of voice and vocalization, and how this aspect of
embodiment might be included in EMF.

6)      Explore rhythm as a primary tool for group container and synchrony, self-expression and regulation. Understand aspects of LBMS Phrasing and its potential application within EMF.

7)      Explore LBMS embedded themes – ‘polarities’ and ‘archetypes’ – and consider how themes might be included to support wellness, self-awareness, and self-expression in EMF.

8)      Begin to develop skills in designing and facilitating one-to-one EMF sessions.

This course takes place online over Zoom, in weekly sessions.
