Director's Story

One Woman’s Journey to Bring Movement Back to Childhood

The Moving Child Films I, II, and III were conceived, directed, and produced by Hana Kamea Kemble of British Columbia, Canada. The project began as a plan to create a 10-minute visual aid for parents and teachers in preschools where Hana worked as a dance/movement facilitator. As the scope and need became evident, that seed grew into three educational documentaries, bringing in many expert voices and essential topics.

These films were realized through the skill and dedication of an exceptional editing team—Jacki Huntington, Rheanna Toy, Gloria Mercer, and Melissa Flagg—supported by additional crew and mentor Kenna Fair. Hana interviewed more than 30 experts across multiple fields, and the team filmed throughout North America, with generous parents who shared their stories and allowed their children to be filmed.

Alongside media and music creation, Hana holds a Master’s in Somatic Psychology (Naropa University). She is a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist (ISMETA), Registered Clinical Counsellor (BCACC), Board-Certified Dance/Movement Therapist (ADTA), Certified Laban Movement Analyst (IMS), Body-Mind Psychotherapist, and Yoga Teacher (RYT-200). She is also the creator/performer of the children’s show In the Garden with Bumbalina and Friends (www.bumbalina.ca)

The Moving Child Films were created to help parents/caregivers, therapists, teachers and health professionals understand the importance of dynamic and expressive movement in children’s healthy development. Giving adults greater knowledge and understanding of how to support and move with children, Hana envisions our next generations thriving!

At this time, many have concerns about factors negatively influencing the physical, emotional-social and cognitive development of children. The Moving Child Films explore relatively simple ways to make a difference. Knowledge is power and there is truly no need for children to suffer and not reach their developmental potential. That said it is important to also acknowledge and tackle systemic societal issues such as lack of support and resources for pregnant women and new parents as well as educators.

Hana enjoys presenting The Moving Child Films for diverse audiences. Workshops and presentations are available to be facilitated in English, French or Spanish. The films have been (and continue to be) translated into several different languages and are also now available for rent on YouTube, with free clips for view there as well.
